Just an info which is probably not that widely known: Sign languages are quite local, so in ZA people speak SASL (South African Sign Language). Foreign hearing impaired people trained in say ASL (American Sign Language) or DGS (Deutsche Gebärdensprache - German Sign Language) will have a hard time understanding an interpreter. Similarly to hearing people spoken to in language they may grasp a foreign word or two off each sentence but not more.
