I just wanted to point out that the local meetings have not been lacking in transparency because of our devotion to taking notes and putting them out there to the list. We've had a few local meetings (e.g. talks-selection) that also had an online tie-in that essentially went like this: a. local people showed up at my house; b. we all got on irc and didn't talk to each other in person (ugh); c. other local people who could not make it to my house showed up on irc; d. no global people showed up (grr). Meeting in person, with local people, has some advantages and can be done in a way that are transparent. I haven't figured out how to involve global people in a way that isn't alienating for in-person people though. micah note - i'm not saying this to advocate that we have local meetings, i'm just wanting to clarify that our f2f has not been as you indicate (with one exception that was rectified later).
