One thing to keep in mind: two-port switch-based opto-electrical convertors will do 10/100/1000 auto-negotiation on the copper side, but have MAC table size limitations.
Proper transceiver-based opto-electrical converters can only do 1000-FD on the copper side (must match the 1000Base-SX fiber side), but are far less likely to cause problems. -- "One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them.
