I have designed a simple patch that fixes the bug for simple situations that were previously failing with deal.II 9.6.1's FETools::extrapolate. I will continue the testing and propose a PR together with a bug report on github once I have time. Given the lack of answers here, I guess this is not the right channel to discuss all this?
