Sounds like a bug in the network layer after some changes I did there.
Haven't confirmed myself yet, but you're not the first to report a
regression there.
I've recently kept trying to make libevent http stack working with
event_base_new() + evhttp_start() - no luck. evhttp_start() seems to be marked
as deprecated in libevent documentation, evhttp_new() + evhttp_bind_socket()
works like a charm.
I'll create a pull request to share my changes.
