Thanks for the information everyone.

Since I'm running dbmail 3.1.7, should I upgrade to the latest version? Is that 
fix for the 'envelope sender' problem included in the newest release?

Also, if I deleted a lot of the emails out of the database, approximately half, 
will dbmail/MySQL reuse the space created by the erased messages or just keep 
expanding?

You could find the minimum space your message store needs by backing up and 
restoring into an empty database on another machine. Assuming you have the 
ability to take backups of RDS (never used it).
