WHICH SMTP?

port 25 must work wituout because this is
where other sites drop their mails for you
BUT it must NOT relay unauthenticated

which is a good configuration but not enforced by exim or dbmail per se
and last but not least if you migrate a large existing userbase you
are most likely not in the position to enforce this setup

exim has little to nothing do do with dbmail

i know only about postfix and it is no problem to use the
dbamil userdatabase for different auth-mechs IF your
passwords in dbmail are stored as plaintext

this affects cyrus-SASL as well as dovecot-SASL
