actually the following was missing..

         INBOX/work/group              <- accessible

I was able to resolve the above problem by doing the following /w Thunderbird.

i) create a dummy folder, INBOX/work/group/z
ii) get the subscribe list, choose INBOX/work/group/a,b .
iii) Delete dummy folder.

I don't know why that worked but it did.

I don't have answers to other questions yet so I appreciate your kind help!
