Ah, ok. This might be the question. Sorting of messages is done client
side. There is no way for the server to know on what field the client
wants to sort.
The IMAP SORT and THREAD extensions
(http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-imapext-sort-13.txt)
should be able to handle this, but since there still IETF drafts and not
RFCs, I don't think we should implement this yet, unless somebody really
wants to use and implement this, of course :)

I'm not sure you answered his question. I read his question as, "When
viewing the messages in a mailbox, does the imap client have to do the
message sorting
(by date, by sender etc...) or is this done server side. I would
imagine this would benefit web based clients the most such as
Squirrellmail etc...

Hi
Server side sorting is not implemented currently. Aaron Stone is
working on adding hooks to libSieve, which will give DBMail the
ability to sort messages on the server, using the same sorting scripts
that one would use on Cyrus IMAP.
