Better yet, simply store a pointers to the message blocks if there are multiple copies of a message on the server. This is one of the drawbacks of MS Exchange Server. It stores muliple copies of everything rather than pointers to the blocks and attachments. Worse the end user can't delete their attachments from the database bloating it even further. corporate types don't like email messages to go away (legalities, you know.). Another feature would be to add flags for deleted and expunged. Once expunged it could be dumped to an xml formatted file outside of the database, but preserving its pointers, and then bz2'd for archival purposes. Efficiency of space should be a prime concern if you're handling large numbers of users and you want the system to scale. A good example of design for this type of system is Novell Groupwise. Yes, you read that correctly. Groupwise has a very eloquent and efficient design. It scales to very large numbers of users and integrates tightly with Novell eDirectory services (read LDAP).
