It would be helpful to be a bit more specific:

    - What are you running software wise, what database?
    - What is the hardware configuration?
    - How big is the database?

Also, quantifying "completely useless" is helpful.  How long does it take
UW-IMAPD to retreive the exact same list of mail, how long for DBMail?

Also, do other IMAP clients exhibit the same thing? What web client are you
using? I think some have issues with making LOTS of IMAP requests that might
not be handled optimally.

What version of DBMail are you using?

It's difficult to diagnose nothingness.
