Required Qualifications:

A database system engineer doesn't have the identical skillset as a DBA,
although most companies just have 1 person who wears both hats. Pepsi is
unique in that they two roles are separate and distinct. You'd have to find
someone who came from as large a shop as Pepsi to find a place where they
are split out, I think. Most places just call it 'DBA' and they are done,
because they aren't big enough to have 2 separate and distinct roles. Please
remember - I have at least 1200 oracle instances, 300+ SQL Server instances,
and 250+ DB2s. We are VERY LARGE. It is very challenging to maneuver in this
sort of environment, if you aren't used to it.

Database Engineers don't create tables, don't do database design, don't tune
SQL, and don't support applications directly.

They have more of an infrastructure slant, more of a focus on unix or Intel
tools, developing supportable and repeatable processes to be rolled out to
hundreds of machines, and standardizing environments.

Anyone can use RMAN to backup a database. But, can you develop a process
using RMAN to backup hundreds of databases in an identical fashion, yet
allowing flexibility.

Anyone can install oracle, but can you demonstrate how you made sure that
your oracle installs on 200+ machines were totally identical, for
supportability purposes?

An engineer would have extensive Unix kornshell and perl scripting
experience, in which to support a large environment like ours, with hundreds
of machines. They need to demonstrate their capabilities of supporting such
a large environment while maintaining consistency across it.
They need to understand what it means to develop something once, and have it
roll out to a bunch of places that we think are 'standard' but because they
are legacy they aren't as 'standard' as we think, have it work for 1,000
variations.
So, I am NOT looking for a DBA for this role. They must have more of an
infrastructure slant, but must be able to work as a DBA if needed.

Optional but nice to have:
Database Design
DB2 / UDB DBA / engineering experience
SQL Server DBA / engineering experience
Teradata DBA / engineering experience
Veritas netbackup experience
HP Openview experience
