Sorry Pascal, but I confirm that with dt 3.4.0 on Windows my memory card inside my card reader is treated exactly as a "normal" folder on my HD/SSD: images files are not copied anywhere else. And the .xmp files are created on my memory card.
I installed dt 3.4.0 using "darktable-3.4.0-win64.exe" downloaded from dt website.
