every time a new hot-key or config parameter is added, I must look very
closely at my ~/.config/darktable/keyboardrc* files and determine that my
preference has not been superseded or causing other difficulties.

sort keyboardrc > keyboardrc.sort
sort keyboardrc_default > keyboardrc_default.sort
meld ke*.sort

sort is necessary to determine changes as I fail to understand order.

then it is necessary to try to maintain dt's idea of order and including
my preferences.

you might apply similar logic to darktablerc, but may not need the sort
step.
