Of course you can edit your darktablerc with a text editor (backup
first, please!)
Every time you leave darktable it saves it's actual status (even the
status of the modules) in your *local* darktablerc config file. If
within dt retouch module is visible in the groups you which, you then
quit dt, relaunch dt, all your settings should be retained. If retouch
disappears, you should check if you edited the right file. Possibly you
have different versions of darktablerc on your system?

Wrong diagnosis on my part .... it is occurring whenever I update
the git!! (which I am doing on a daily basis and daily I am also
creating a new folder) So it is the git update that creates the problem.
