If you are asking about the "Space" vs. "Space bar" part of that discussion,
the convention I'm aware of is to use the name associated with the keysym
(usually ignoring the L and R designation for modifier keys). Most people will
know, when reading those names in documentation, what physical action it
requires on their part (some people may remap keys on their physical keyboard
for ergonomic reasons).
