The issue is probably a migration which didn't work:

I'm using darktable master which was normally quite stable. The question
is
how can I fix this, change the blendop version in the XMP file back to an
earlier that the migration is redone and hope it will work?
If you have an XMP previous to the migration it should work.
If not, how do you fix it?
But you probably didn't notice, the presets in data.db are all broken.
So best to restore your backup :)
All presets or just the ones using blend modes or masks? It really would help
to get more details what actually is broken.
the root of the whole mess is the following: After my pull request #1809
was accepted I became aware that it was virtually impossible to create
the inverse of a blend mask if the brightness of the blend mask has been
adjusted. Because of this and because of other feedback I decided to
tweak a little bit the way how the guided filter is integrated into the
blend operations. It is impossible to fully transform the blend
parameters of PR #1809 to the revised version. Therefore and because we
are on a dev branch I concentrated on backward compatibility to
darktable 2.4.4 but compatibility to PR #1809 has not been taken into
account. As a consequence we have two incompatible version 8 blend
parameters after acceptance of PR #1827. Mea culpa.
All early adopters and testers I would like to ask to restore your
images from your backup and reimport them into darktable current git
master. This should solve all problems. If there are any edits with
blend mask parameters version 7 or earlier that are not imported
properly, however, this has to be considered a serious bug. Please
report in such a case.
@Andreas: If you do not have a recent backup, I would like to ask you to
do the following:
* Backup all your xmp files which have been converted recently but can
no longer be opend properly with current git master.
* Do to touch them, do not apply any further edits!
* Send me one or two of these files (XMP + RAW) via private mail.
* I will try to provide a tool to fix this issue (as far as possible).
This, however, will take some time and I can not guarantee that this
conversion will be possible. But I will try my best.
Regards,
Heiko
