did you tried also the second algorithm (levin-matting)  which you can
select in the foreground selection tool? I think it's better then the
default algorithm.

Extracting objects with fuzzy borders like hair, fur or semitransparent
areas is a big challenge for artists and I have seen no suitable solution
in the FOSS field yet. GIMP has a foreground extraction tool
but the results were not satisfying even in the clear case of a girl
with dark flying hair before a light background (testet with latest
GIMP master).
I personally would welcome such a feature.
