Just to make sure that I understand correctly: When setting the collect module
to show everything you got you end up with a startup time (time until the GUI
is shown) of about 15 seconds. When setting collect to show just a few images
you get an instant startup?

In the cases where dt doesn't come up immediately, what do you see? A GUI just
consisting of a grey background without any buttons? No window at all? A GUI
that is showing everything but isn't reacting to user interaction?

I am asking as for me darktable always starts in less than a second with 10k
images in the collection, collect module set to show all images, and the
crawler enabled. At least after the 2nd start, so that all the folder
information accessed by the crawler is already cached by the kernel.
