As Patrick said, the red borders are our hint that GTK wasn't able to load the theme file. The first thing to check would be the presence of a darktable.css in ~/.config/darktable/. If that file doesn't exist you should clean out your build/ folder and try compilation again. If you still see the red borders I'd like you to start darktable from a console and paste the messages printed there.
