Hallöchen! Apparently, exiv2 has serious issues on the project level, see <http://dev.exiv2.org/boards/3/topics/2830>. The current developer Robin Mills (effectively only developer AFAICS) is looking for a successor and plans to stop working on it at the end of this year as the amount of his free time will change significantly in 2018.
digiKam seriously considers switching to Exiftool due to this continuous trouble. If you feel to have the ability to help, please consider contributing to exiv2. It is certainly a valuable product with many and prominent users.
