Hi, I have been lately investigating how does film grain actually look and I have noticed that usually the grain is invisible on the darker (black) parts of the image (https://shotonfilm.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/photo.jpg). Darktable's grain module produces light specks on the black areas of photos.
Video grain sample vendors (such as http://rgrain.com/) advise to use an overlay or soft light blend mode to add grain to footage. However the grain sample they use is around 50% grey so that overlay or soft light doesn't shift the image brightness very much. The darktable filter however, when used with the two blend modes above darkens the image significantly and in a way that I cannot manage to compensate with a simple levels adjustment. What is the suggested way to use the grain module in order to obtain realistic results? Ideally I would like to be able to save a preset that actually looks like film and apply it, without having to create a specific curve to compensate for the grain darkening.
