I vaguely remembered something about the Taliban not being recognized by
the UN as Afghanistan's legitimate govt, apparently they were still
acknowledging the govt in exile or something. Apparently that was a
brief moment when the US actually cared about the UN's opinion, but, as
usual, only because it was in their interest.

It is dated 2/5/01 and this is the headline:
Taliban Says It Will Swap Bin Laden for Recognition

Even better, there was this comment from the Taliban foreign minister:
"We hope the new American administration will be
more flexible and engage with us"

Oh yeah, they engaged all right...
