George Bush leading the Pax Americana juggeranut? God forbid! Watching
Dubya in action is like watching Gilligan build a nuclear power plant out
of coconuts and bamboo shoots ... At least Canada's Prime Minister can
speak English and eat a pretzel and watch tv at the same time. "

The support of the American people for Bush's war is
reported to drop sharply if there are a lot of Iraqi casualties. Do you
suppose that is why we aren't hearing about them? "Perhaps
surprising to many abroad, a plurality of Americans would not support a
war in which 5,000 Iraqi civilians were to die. In that event, opposition
to the war rises to 47 percent, against 40 percent in support. Even 1,000
Iraqi civilian deaths is too high a price to pay for many Americans, with
just 50 percent willing to support such a war and 39 percent opposed
under those circumstances."

Turns Ugly. That's What Wars Do"
Fools Rush In, Part 2
Current and former U.S. military officers are blaming
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and his aides for the inadequate
troop strength on the ground in Iraq, saying the civilian leaders
"micromanaged" the deployment plan out of mistrust of the
generals and an attempt to prove their own theory that a light,
maneuverable force could handily defeat Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
More than a dozen officers interviewed, including a senior officer in
Iraq, said Rumsfeld took significant risks by leaving key units in the
United States and Germany at the start of the war. That resulted in an
invasion force that is too small, strung out, underprotected,
undersupplied and awaiting tens of thousands of reinforcements who will
not get there for weeks.

Fools rush in where angels fear to
tread
"A war that lasts months may also leave a vacuum that
could encourage trouble elsewhere around the globe, some generals and
strategists worry. If the Pentagon does deploy into Iraq all the
troops currently scheduled to go, about half the combat power of both the
Army and the Marine Corps will be in Iraq. One senior general at the
Pentagon said he is especially concerned that North Korea, which has been
locked in a confrontation with the United States over its nuclear
program, will attempt to capitalize on the situation. "Tote up the
ground forces, naval forces and air assets in or en route to the war
zone," said retired Army Col. Andrew Bacevich, now a professor of
international relations at Boston University. "Could the U.S.
respond to a second major contingency -- like Korea, for example?"
His answer: The Pentagon may say it can, but he disagrees."
