The Doha round of trade negotiations are staring their first defeat in the face, with countries now virtually certain to miss their March 31 deadline to agree on the next round of farm trade reforms.

The chairman of the agriculture talks, senior World Trade Organisation official Stuart Harbinson, overnight resubmitted his compromise plan on farm trade reform with only minor changes, despite his previous draft being rejected by all sides.

A vast gulf remains between the radical reforms demanded by the United States and the Australian-led Cairns Group, on one hand, and the minor changes the European Union and Japan are offering.MORE ON...
