32 Cops Disciplined as Kmart Raid Fallout Continues
"This department is hopelessly corrupt and this is a grotesque charade posing as justice," HPD officer Mark Aguirre told the media after news of his firing was announced Wednesday. Sgt. Ken Wenzel, one of 13 officers suspended with pay over the Aug. 18 K-Mart raid, resigned Tuesday hours before he was to meet with acting Police Chief Tim Oettmeier. Aguirre and Wenzel were indicted last month on five counts each of official oppression for the Aug. 18 sweep of a K-Mart parking lot, where officers arrested hundreds on charges of trespassing and curfew violations. Thirteen police officers were suspended with pay and all the trespassing and curfew violations dropped. No charges were filed against the other 11 officers implicated in the incident.
