Truth
It seems that it was expedient not to tell the truth about a small nation
that rose, fought and lost. As far as the capitalist commentators were
concerned this was simply a move to shake off Russian repression and a
communist dictatorship, while the Stalinists called it a fascist
counter-revolution aided and abetted by the CIA in order to defeat
"socialism". It was true that the demand for the withdrawal of Russian
troops from Hungarian territory was a major item in all declarations made
by the people and the hatred of the Stalinist regime was the main fuel of
the revolutionary express. However, this uprising had very quickly moved on
from basic demands like that and became what Bill Lomax says in his book
Hungary 1956 "a social revolution aimed not at restoring a previous regime
but at creating a radically new social order, one that would be both more
democratic than the capitalist West and more socialist than the communist
East."
Lomax was one of very few chroniclers of the revolution who understood that
the uniqueness of 1956 was in its finally clear cut movement towards
establishing workers democracy, with Workers Councils, a Workers Militia,
and the sort of true democratic freedom that Lomax felt was a brand new
system, but which Marxists know as the re-establishment of the ideas and
practice of Lenin and the early days of the young Soviet regime after the
Russian Revolution. 1956 in Hungary was Trotsky's political revolution in
practice, which is why it was drowned in blood the way it was. FROM

The whole WWP (whose leaders staff and run ANSWER) was formed as a split
from the Trotskyist movement specifically to support the USSR invasion of
Hungary. And they've continued that tradition in applauding the murder of
Chinese students in the streets of Tianemen. And they have been organizing
against war crime trials for Milosevic and denying that any mass murders
happened in places like Srebernica-- essentially the equivalent of
holocaust denial.

TOWARD A MAXIMUM ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT
Are you outraged with the US government's arrogant practice of policing the
rest of the world, yet are you leery of having your outrage exploited b y
obsolete Leftists for their own bankrupt agendas? Are you pissed off that
the US military is once again bullying tiny Third World countries and
preparing to slaughter innocent civilians, yet are you hesitant to give any
credibility to the Paleolithic Left's claims to leading a mass anti-war

There's a simple, do-it-yourself alternative that effectively challenges
the US government's military adventurism while denying the fossilized Left
its organizing and leadership pretensions. This strategy is based on the
idea that thousands of grains of sand can cause even the largest, most
powerful machine to grind to a halt by becoming wedged in the gears and
stuck between sensitive parts to gum up the works. The goal of this
alternative strategy is to put our anti-war activism and movement to
maximum effect.
