RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
1974 to 1980 US Army Intelligence
From January 1975 to January 1977, while assigned to Headquarters, US Army Intelligence Agency (USAINTA), I served as interpreter (French to English and vice versa) and escort for foreign VIPs relocated in the United States. I translated technical material (specification sheets and user manuals) for the Intelligence Materiel Development and Support Office (IMDSO).
Between January and September 1977 I was trained as a Counterintelligence Agent and attended the Advanced German Course at the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California and was graduated with honors.
While assigned to a counterintelligence field office at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Belgium, from November 1977 to August 1979, I used French daily in conversation and correspondence and interpreted and translated for non-French-speaking colleagues and non-English-speaking liaison contacts. Maintained liaison at the national level with Belgian, Dutch and Luxembourgeois counterintelligence and security officials.
During my last year of active service, I acted as interpreter and translator for the Fifth (US) Corps in addition to my regular duties as a staff officer of the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion (Frankfurt, Germany). My experience includes two conferences between the First (French) Army and the Fifth (US) Corps in which I interpreted consecutively from French into English and vice versa, and prepared and presented the Fifth Corps Operations Briefing in French. I also of course translated many teletype messages and other correspondence. For my own unit I translated German documents on military, intelligence and technical subjects.
1979 to the present - free-lance translator
In 1979 I made a modest debut as a part-time translator, translating newspaper articles from German into English. Since my move to California in 1980 I have translated many German and French articles on aeronautics for the various aviation groups that I am involved with. As a full-time student, I supplemented my income by doing contract translation and production work for local agencies. I have continued to solicit work in this field since late 1990, when I began concentrating on magazine editing and database publishing.
