TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief General
Endriartono Sutarto is to sue the Washington Post regarding its report of a
shooting incident in Timika.
Previously on Thursday (7/11), General Sutarto told US Special Envoy for
Terrorism Affairs, Frank Taylor, that he regretted the report.
“I have complained strongly and will sue,” he said at the State palace on
Friday (8/11).
Sutarto said the daily newspaper had slandered him by reporting that he had
met with TNI high functionaries to plan an attack against the US essential
facilities, such as those in Timika (Washington Post, Sunday, 3/11).
Moreover, it was reported that the information was provided by a US source
in Indonesia, although the US Embassy in Indonesia has denied this.
Regarding the suit, Sutarto said it would not disturb military cooperation
between the two countries, as Taylor had also denied the report.
