What's wrong with loopback FS and in what sense is it a kludge? If you don't like it then put your code where your mouth is by writing and submitting patches to OpenBSD to add your own "real" encryption. If you can't do this then you are unqualified to attack work others have put in for free as well as being naive in trusting closed source crypto from the likes of Microsoft.
