Developers and Gamers Get Closer
Yo. GameSpy's Mod Developer's Week has ended, but the contributions that mod-makers are making to gaming won't ever stop. Our feature ends today on a really positive note. Check out Sluggo's write-up of The Westwood Mod College. Here's the story in a nutshell: Westwood, a major AAA game developer, has invited modification coders from all around the world to their studios in Vegas to give them a hands-on with the Command & Conquer: Renegade engine. They want the community to take their game and run with it.

Although id Software was the first company to really open up their first-person shooters to the community to tinker with, I credit Half-Life creators Valve Software with the current level of industry support we see for these amateur garage-game developers. Valve's "Mod Expos" showcased peoples' work, they've released documented code dumps to make it easy for people to modify their game, and they've reached out to the community in order to take Counter-Strike from a closet Internet phenomenon to a polished, mainstream product that you can even find on store shelves. It's great because we gamers get nearly unlimited ways to play our favorite games, and would-be game developers have a showcase for their talents on their way to becomming pro. I can't say enough good stuff about this movement ... so I'll stop.

  • Maps - Quite a few of the maps that were released by Cavedog prior to their demise.
  • Patch and Official Units - Never be without your FARK again!
  • TA Promotional Materials - Movies and Wallpapers!
Thats just for starters, we plan to constantly index new files as they are uploaded to the FilePlanet by our vast selection of hosted sites, so that the files may be preserved for all time where everyone can get to them. [back to headlines]

The newest site to call PU its home is none other than IN-Site! They provide editorials, interviews, map reviews, and some forums for you to enjoy. Upon launch there are an outstanding 8 map reviews (21 in total), one interview, and an editorial entitled ‘An Unreal Future’. Here's a small preview of the editorial for you:

For me it didn't matter how many folloe-the-trend gaming review sites out there praising the "revolutionary" one player aspect and graphics (graphics were good however) I found the single player so excrutiatingly boring past the Vortex Rikers map. Even the multiplayer sucked despite good maps due to heaps of bugs . What I did discover however was a lonely little file called unrealed.exe. It is this file, second to alcohol that I blame all my forgotten hours of the last 4 or five years. People where now able with relative ease to create their own 3D environment, and so a community was formed
