I didn't mean that %HOMEDRIVE% and %HOMEPATH% are not set (not sure if you
think that's what I meant) -- those two plus %HOME% all show up in
System->Advanced->Environment Variables. The first two are normal Windows
vars, and it's only %HOME% I'm trying to eliminate.
Yep, that's what I meant too.
If %HOME% is deleted from System->Advanced->Environment Variables it
automagically reappears after a reboot, presumably courtesy of MKS but it's
not obvious how it's restored nor how to get rid of it.
Hm, I hadn't noticed that myself but then again I'm not trying to run Cygwin
on the machines which have MKS (unfortunately). Beyond uninstalling MKS, I
don't know what would help here either. I'm not a MKS guru. ;-)
IIRC, MKS installs a startup program in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and/or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
that tries to 'fix' your environment on every time the machine is
started. It's been a long time since I had MKS installed though, and my
memory's not what it used to be...
Looks like it's not that bad. ;-) I looked and found a likely value down
the first path - NuTCSetupEnviron. I'd bet if the OP removed this value,
HOME (and other usurped environment variables) would stay unset for good
when changed in the environment. Didn't try it myself. I can't really
muck with the machines with MKS that I have access to.
