Simple. Cygwin 1.5.x doesn't support Unicode. Code in CVS for the next release series (1.7.x) will. If you want to get some early insight, you can check out a snapshot <http://cygwin.com/snapshots/>. This, of course, isn't released code so use at your own risk. If you do try it and have problems, report them here. Anticipating your next question, there is no release date yet for 1.7.x.
