Your first problem is that you commandeered a thread, rather than starting
a new one for this unrelated subject.

Windows console events and cygwin apps are two different beasts, and
mixing the two is likely to cause problems.  In general using win32 API
behind cygwin's back is asking for subtle breakage when you upgrade cygwin.
