I apparently jumped the gun on assuming that there were problems with
"the patch" and should have just said "with windows paths in make".  I
apologize for spreading false information.

The newly discovered issue has now been patched in upstream gnu make (thanks Eli). I have made the patched executable available in the same place as before if anyone
wants to try it out:
