That warning was the key. Automake has to be run during the prep state. Running configure is not enough; you should try running 'autoreconf' prior to configure, to guarantee that you pick up changes to Makefile.am. Or, now that you have automake (and I hope autoconf) installed, rerun the prep stage. - -- Life is short - so eat dessert first!
