Best guess is that it is still this problem: http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-patches/2004-q3/msg00079.html (see subsequent discussion for why this wasn't a real solution) which, AFAIK, remains as a problem today. The latest snapshot just increases the size of a pipe buffer. So, it isn't a real fix, just a workaround.
