I have the same problem like Thomas Smith (12 Jul 2005): "When I start the Cygwin Bash Shell for the first, I get dropped to a shell prompt and placed in /usr/bin. My Home directory isn't created..."
The other problem (could not use any commands) was solved by installing an older version of coreutils.
