~/.bashrc is not read for interactive login shells. "man bash", section "INVOCATION". The typical thing to do if you want .bashrc to be read for both login and non-login shells is to place something like "[ -f ~/.bashrc ] && . ~/.bashrc" in ~/.bash_profile.
