Some debugging suggestions: Doesn't "make" print a trace of the commands it's invoking? There's a way to make it do this with a command line option. This way you'd know what the arguments passed to the compiler were. Also, what is the value of $MAKE_MODE in your environment? What is the value of $SHELL? Can you print "$$SHELL" from inside the Makefile?
