Yeah, stupendously helpful answer, Robert! :-) Anyway, Fergus, assuming /etc/setup/*.lst.gz are still intact, you could try this: cd /etc/setup echo "INSTALLED.DB 2" > installed.db ls *.lst.gz | sed -e 's/^\(.*\)\.lst\.gz$/\1 \1-0.tar.bz2 0/' >> installed.db Now run setup. It will see the installed version of each installed package as "0", so it will want to reinstall every package - but, letting it do that will be a lot quicker than reselecting all the packages manually.
