Try typing "dir \\server" at the command line. It doesn't work. That's because the windows functions FindFirstFile/FindNextFile don't understand shares. Neither does cygwin. I'm sure that cygwin could be extended to do the right thing in this case using mechanisms similar to what happens with /cygdrive.
