So, I've recieved confirmation that this problem is only with cygwin perl, and not with GNU/Linux perl (5.8).
guys, can we PLEASE practice a little bandwidth conservation here? there's no need to quote > 100 lines of "context" for a simple two-line reply... Bits are cheap and electrons a renewable resource, but overquoting sure is annoying.
