$TERM is not a random made-up string. It should be supported by appropriate
terminfo(5) entry on the system. If an entry is not found, it will fall back
to some other entry, which could be 'vt100' or even 'dumb', which is not what
you want, certainly.
Yes, I forgot to mention that. One way to check whether a terminal description addressed by your $TERM value is actually installed on the system, is to run the tool `infocmp`.
