I've sent the patch. The output of the OP's test case is now the same
on 64-bit as on 32-bit:
$ ./a
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
what(): basic_string::_S_construct null not valid
Aborted (core dumped)
Is the patch on gcc-patches? I'm not seeing it somehow.
