I'm trying to exhaust all the possibilities before submitting a bug. -- Dear Marco, I have tried the package from cygwin. It installed correctly and was 'kind of able to run' (imports went fine): But somewhere in the first plot it threw an error. I do not have the log here with me but it was something related to 'get_facecolor' in matplotlib. The exact same program was able to run flawless in my lubuntu so I infer it is something to do with libgeos on cygwin. Thank you both for your valuable input. I opened an issue on matplotlib basemap. https://github.com/matplotlib/basemap/issues/314 I'll let you know when I have this problem solved.
