I have a quick suggested addition to the FAQ:
FAQ #nnnn:
Q: How do I determine the packages and version numbers I have installed
on my system?
A: Use the "cygcheck -c" option. This lists package names and versions
as text.
Sample output (abbreviated):
$ cygcheck -c
Cygwin Package Information
Package Version
XFree86-base 4.2.0-1
ash 20020731-1
autoconf 2.54-1
.... etc ...
