The 2nd time you ran startxwin, It looks like Cygwin thinks you lack 3D acceleration. Try this command: $ startxwin -- -extension GLX -multiwindow Also, the "UnknownGroup" might be an issue that prevented you from writing the lock file to /tmp/.
