I finally managed to solve this. As strange (or wildly speculative) as it may sound, I have concluded the problem is related to chere (cygwin bash prompt here) somehow interfering with the permissions on sh.exe. If anybody is interested in more details, I can provide them. Thanks to Larry for his help.
