After spending some time with this over the rest of the weekend, I came to the same conclusions. I don't want to be a pain, so I think I'll let the irssi maintainer get to it at their own pace. I will, however, attempt to install 5.10 in parallel as you suggest. I'd rather have the updated version of perl, as I've just installed mosh, and mosh will not operate with the older perl package.
